Lock, Stock, and Barrel Oak

Barrel Oak Winery is at the forefront of Virginia’s vinous vanguard.

Somm Journal · October 9, 2026

Barrel Oak Winery & Brewery has always drawn a crowd. Perched in the Piedmont hills of Delaplane, Virginia, in the Middleburg AVA, the 78-acre estate was founded in 2006 and quickly became a community gathering spot. Sweeping views of the vineyard and the Blue Ridge Mountains—not to mention an on-site brewery whose beers round out its portfolio—have kept its picnic tables full of weekenders. But since director of production and head winemaker Jeremy Ligon came aboard in 2021, followed by new owners Kavelle and Ken Bajaj in 2022, the winery has entered an exciting new chapter. In April, I spent several days on the property with Ligon and general manager Adriana Lucca, staying in the Winemaker’s Cottage, tasting through the portfolio, and touring the vineyard. And I left, frankly, smitten.
